It can be any size from a dime to a dinner plate.

Cause 2: Plaster delamination (what I had above the shower). The plaster layer itself separated from the lath or the drywall behind it. You see a cluster of small bumps because the plaster is cracking loose in pieces, not as one sheet. This is what you get when moisture has been working on old plaster for years, or when a previous patch did not bond right.

Cause 3: Substrate separation (the hallway pinprick). This is the one nobody warns you about. The surface layer is fine, but the layer below it has pulled away, often along a seam or near a fixture.
